The Death of Charlie Kirk
A lot of wrongs were displayed in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's death.
First, there were those who saw him as a hero. Yes, he was a devout Christian, but so devout to a fault that he twisted and weaponized God’s words to alienate minorities, and contrasted the words of God that teaches us to embrace everyone.
Yes, he was a skilled debater. I even found myself watching some of his debates with college students on YouTube not to be swayed by his opinions, but to pick up words, phrases, or figures of speech that weren’t insulting and that, as a writer, I might find useful.
And yes, he was a father and a husband who left behind two young children. That’s why it was also wrong for people to make TikTok videos celebrating his death. If Duterte, for example dies, I wouldn’t celebrate it, I’d simply remain silent and let his followers grieve.
Another wrong came from conservatives who are now using his assassination as a fire-starter to wage more war against liberals. This only deepens America’s divide, in stark difference to how united the country was in the days after 9/11.
In the end, America, the world’s superpower, is showing us that the cracks in its political system that have spilled over into its society is like a fire that cannot be contained.
